–description EN–

theo +/-’ is an experimental film to explore the phenomena of bipolarity as a perception to self-knowledge.

The work focuses on the basic principles of Taoist cosmology, whereas two complementary extremes that constantly play against and with each other, in other words counter opposite phenomena occurring in an existence. Aesthetically the elements are reduced in a form of sphere, conducted based on a cyclic model of the universe. Metaphorically confronts various notions such as; black & white, irrational & stable, ying & yang, fusion & fission, material & spiritual, existence & non-existence.

The idea had been initiated by the artist’s experience of a close family member’s death, and the birth of a new family member. The experience that happened to one another led the artist to think over the explanation behind one’s existence. Recurrent scenes of a ‘bright closed room’ and a ‘dark infinite space’ indicates ‘current life’ and ‘life after death’, inextricably linked together like inside and outside. Rhythm and silence is an important factor in this work, giving a moment toward viewers to subliminally comprehend the opposing factors through their auditory sense. The repetitive rhythms indicate an oscillation of a life as a pulse, at the same time conducting the artist’s version of a chant toward the predecessor.

The work seeks into a new interpretation of eastern philosophy to understand further into what we are and where we are heading to.
