‘ab aeterno’ is an experimental film installation to compose an artist interpretation of the infinitely remote point of time in the past. The visual elements are focused into fundamental states of matter; such as solid, liquid, gas, & plasma, among micro and macro phenomena.

Inspiration comes from a various explanation of collective memory seen across our intellectual knowledge. In ancient Indian philosophy known as Akasha, in Buddhism Kokū , in modern we can see it through Carl Gustav Jung’s Collective Unconsciousness or Rupert Sheldrake’s Morphic Resonance. Additionally, Baba collated the visual ideas with his 6 year old daughter, to examine a common imagination seen through different minds.

Technically speaking, the images were taken from the ordinary daily moments and science museums, all shot in actual footage without 3D CG being used. Most of the scenes are realized by mixing lights, fire, water, smoke, and plasma, resulting a spacy aesthetic. The music was associated to frequency related to Earth’s vibration, known as Schumann Resonance. Baba hypothesizes this resonance is the frequency to deliver information from the collective memory, potentially functioning as a part of Gaia network.

The artist examines the imaginary fragments of our long time memory, assembling the remnants of resonance, scarcely after birth of time and space.

‘ab aeterno’は悠久の昔の光景を想像して制作した実験映像である。物質の基本状態である個体、液体、気体、プラズマを構成要素に用いて、極小と極大の空間で起こるさまざまな現象になぞらえた。

着想は私たちの知識において垣間見られる’集合記憶’から得ている。古代インド哲学における「アカーシャ」、仏教における「虚空」、C.G. ユングの「集合的無意識」そして、R. シェルドレイクの「形態共鳴仮説」等、多岐にわたる長期記憶の概念を参考にした。また、作家は6歳の娘に「はじまりの姿」を問い、双方で合意した共通項をイメージ化した。

技術的には普段身の回りにおける光景をカメラでおさめ、特殊な現象の被写体は科学博物館で撮影した。水、光、けむり、花火、プラズマを映像内で混ぜると宇宙が出来上がることも偶然の発見であった。3Dコンピューターグラフィックは一切用いていない。音響は地球の周波数と言われる「シューマン共振」に音階を調律して制作。集合記憶の仮説に基づくならば、シューマン共振の周波数に宇宙的情報のネットワークが構成されると考える。以心伝心や、虫の知らせ、過去生の記憶等は、外部の記憶装置という仮説上では説明がつく。

「とおい昔の記憶の破片」から広がる刹那的な儚さと懐かしさ。私たちは、それらの残響に共鳴を通じてつながる感情を「美しさ」と解釈しているのかもしれない。
