‘Contemporary Art Practices 2023’

Course Abstract:
Humans began with Art. The concept naturally emerged, when we created classifications in our minds, embraced feelings, or named objects. Words, letters, constellations, name of the newborn, cave murals… Art is at the origin of human intellectual and emotional activities, and the world we perceive is Art itself.
The purpose of this course is to expose students to a wide range of interpretations of art and to foster creativity through practice. The class will consist of (1) Lecture and (2) Training sessions to deepen students’ understanding of the creative act
In the Lectures, we will focus on cultural sciences (philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, psychology, mathematics..) and examine various case studies of conceptualization. As Training, students will work on a pop quiz related to the lecture context and strengthen their unique expression. Students will be encouraged to discuss the topics and become familiar with the open dialog.
I believe that actual practice is the fastest way to learn about Art. Therefore, the final assignment will be creating your own artwork with the summarized text explaining the work. The final deliverable can be in any style, media, and technique. Excellent works will be requested for presentation at the end of the term.
By confronting Art through the creator’s perspective, I aim to have students discover their view of Art and acquire the ability to express their inner voice. I hope that the experience gained in this lecture will provide hints for actively living through the coming era.
